Valluvar Kottam, Chennai

Valluvar Kottam in Chennai is a modern landmark of the city which is dedicated to the classical Tamil poet, philosopher and saint Thiruvalluvar. This beautiful place is situated at the intersection of the Kodambakkam High road and the Village road. Valluvar Kottam is a beautiful monument and was constructed in 1976 in the memory of Thiruvalluvar. Thiruvalluvar was a great poet and philosopher who wrote famous Thirukkurals about 2000 years before. This scripture has 1330 verses and 133 chapters which are inscribed on bas-relief in the front hall corridors.

Valluvar Kottam is famous monument of South India in the city of Chennai and also known as the modern landmark of the city. Couplets from this famous work of poet Thiruvalluvar can also be seen on the corridors of the auditorium. Valluvar Kottam is now situated on the place where once was an unused lake. Valluvar Kottam is the only one of its kind monument in Tamil Nadu. Timing to visit this beautiful monument is from 8 AM - 6 PM. Closed on Fridays and National Holidays.

Structure and Architecture of Valluvar Kottam
Valluvar Kottam's construction is like a temple chariot and it is a replica of the temple chariot in Thiruvarur. The height of the chariot is 39 meters and a life-size statue of Thiruvalluvar is situated on it. The capacity of Valluvar Kottam auditorium is of 4000 people. The auditorium of Valluvar Kottam is said to be the largest in Asia. The architect of the memorial is South Indian traditional architect. Thirukkural has got no pillars for support and inscribed on the granite pillars that surround the auditorium. All the 133 chapters of Thirukkural are described on the base of the chariot. Over 3000 blocks of stone were used to create this memorial to Tamil culture.
