Visakhapatnam Andhra Pradesh

Visakhapatnam is a coastal port city in the state of Andhra Pradesh. This city is also known as the Jewel of the East Coast. This place is very beautiful and visited by thousands of tourists every year. There are several hills, Ghats and beaches which make this place very beautiful. This beautiful city is also the home of the eastern Navel Command of the Indian Navy. As a tourist point of view, there are several Buddhist caves and places, beaches, cliffs, hilltops, temples, zoological parks and many more things. This beautiful city is the second largest city of Andhra Pradesh. There are several famous tourist attractions in Visakhapatnam known as Ramakrishna Beach, Kali Temple, Gangavaram, Kambalakonda Sanctuary, Jagadamba Center, Ropeway Terminal, War Memorial, Matsyadarshini Aquarium, Araku Valley, Borra Caves, Simhachalam, Ross Hill, Submarine Museum, and many more. Visakhapatnam is very much influenced by Buddhism as there are 5th century BC caves which extended up to the Godavari River. So in one word, you can say that Visakhapatnam has everything which a visitor desires during his tour.

Tourist Attractions in Visakhapatnam
Ramakrishna Beach : Ramakrishna Beach in Visakhapatnam is also known by the name of R.K. Beach and this is the most popular beach of the country. This is the most famous holiday spot for the locals during their weekends and holidays. Swimming here on this beach is allowed by very dangerous.

Yarada Beach : Visakhapatnam is known for its beautiful beaches which are both scenic and un-crowded. This beach is a private beach which comes under Agrigold plantations therefore you need to pay a fee of Rs. 10/- to get onto the beach. Swimming is risky here.

Kali Temple : Kali Temple is at R.K. Beach and 11 km away from the city. This is a famous temple and visited by thousands of locals for worshipping. AP Tourism Development Corporation is having its Beach Resort known as Punnami on the hillside overlooking the beach.

The Simhachalam Temple : Simhachalam temple in Visakhapatnam is a famous and beautiful temple, dedicated to Lord Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swami. This temple was constructed by King Krishnadevaraya and is one of its kinds in the country. There is a beautifully carved 16 pillared Natya Mandapa and the 96 pillared Kalyana Mandapa in the temple. This temple is known for its architectural splendor and sculptures of 10-11th century. The temple bears reference to the Chola and Chalukya styles of architecture. The environment in the temple is very different and very pleasant.

Gangavaram : Gangavaram is around 11 km away from the city of Visakhapatnam and this is a most beautiful beach of the city. There are several rocks which are like some structures and attract lot of people.

Bhimili : Bhimili is a small and beautiful beach about 25 km from the city. There is a small village called Bheemunipatnam which has the remains of a Portuguese church and Dutch cemeteries.

Kambalakonda Sanctuary : This is a gorgeous nature preserved sanctuary which is known for its peaceful environment. This sanctuary is only 20 minutes drive away from the city centre. Entrance fee for this sanctuary is Rs. 10 per adult. The best part of this beautiful Sanctuary is its greenery, hiking trail and the fantastic views of the ocean.

Jagadamba Center : Jagadamba center is a popular shopping center of Visakhapatnam. This place is known for its famous shopping centers and malls. There is a famous Jagadamba movie theatre which is considered one of the best movie auditoriums of the country.

Kailasagiri Ropeway Terminal : This is a local and favorite short ride on the hill of Kailasagiri. From this ropeway ride, you will see R.K. Beach, Rushikonda Beach and spectacular view of the sea. There is a huge sculpture of Shiva and Parvati on the hill. There are several famous tourist attractions on the hilltop like under construction doll museum, eating areas and several wonderful views.

War Memorial : War memorial of Visakhapatnam is a famous tourist attraction which was built in the remembrance of the victory at sea on 1971 Indo Pak war. This museum is situated on the beach road, just opposite to the Submarine Museum. For exhibition, there are a fighter plane, a tank and few replicas of missiles.

Matsyadarshini Aquarium : Matsyadarshini Aquarium on the beach of R.K. Beach is a beautiful aquarium and known for its good collection of marine as well as freshwater fishes. Exit gate of the aquarium is built as the mouth of a huge white tipped shark and entry fee for this is Rs. 20.

Ross Hill : This is a beautiful hill and a unique site to see. There are three hills which are dedicated to three different faiths. Ross hill was named after a certain Monsieur Ross who built his house on it in 1864. Now this place is converted into a chapel Mother Mary's Church. There is a tomb of a Muslim saint which is known as Darga Pahad and visited by several Hindu and Muslim devotees. Sri Venkateswara Konda is a temple which is situated on the third hillock and dedicated to the Lord Venkatesha.

Submarine Museum : This museum is one of its kinds and created in a real submarine of Indian Navy. This submarine is one of the earliest submarines procured from Russia. This museum is manned by retired navel people and the entry fee for the museum is Rs. 25.

Naval Museum : Naval Museum is one more museum about maritime history of India. This museum houses several unique and beautiful pictures, models and content of Indian maritime history.

Bojjana Konda : Near Sankaram Village is situated Bojjana Konda which is known for its architectural remnants of the Buddhist period. Bojjana Konda has one of the most remarkable groups of Buddhist monuments which are dated from 200 BC to 700 AD and were found during the excavations in 1906. There are series of rock-cut caves, numerous groups of monolithic dagobas, a rock-cut stupa and several sculptures. On the western side of the eastern hill is a stairway, partly rock-cut and partly structural, which leads up to a large double-storied cave. The cave chamber is rectangular in shape. This chamber is divided into 20 compartments by four cross rocks of 16 massive pillars. In the centre is the rock-cut stupa standing on a square platform.

Other Buddhist Sites : There are several Buddhist excavations in and around Visakhapatnam known as Thotla Konda, Bhavi Konda and Salihundam. These caves and sites are during the second century AD. It is said that some of the corporal relics of the Buddha were preserved at these places.

Indira Gandhi Zoological Park : There is a Zoological Park in Visakhapatnam known as Indira Gandhi Zoological Park which is between the National Highway 5 and Beach Road. There are around 700 animals belonging to about 90 species.

How to Reach Visakhapatnam
By Air : There is an International Airport in Visakhapatnam, known as Vizag International Airport. This airport is the busiest and only International Airport in Coastal Andhra. Flights from this airport are well connected with Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Tirupati and Kolkata.

By Rail : Vishakhapatnam is the centre point for the trains between Chennai and Howrah. This railway station is well connected by railway network to all the important places in Andhra Pradesh and in India. The city is connected to Vijayawada Junction, Secunderabad Railway Station, Raipur, Bhopal Junction, Gwalior, Chennai Central, Howrah Station, New Delhi Railway Station etc. through rail.

By Road : National Highway No.5 passes through Vishakhapatnam and bus services connect it to and from all the major cities of the state of South India. There are also private buses and cars which connect other cities and states with Visakhapatnam. There are frequent buses to Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Araku and Rajahmundry. There are even bus services to Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guntur, Tirupati, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and few other parts of Orissa and Karnataka.

By Sea : Visakhapatnam serves as the gateway for waterways for the state of Andhra Pradesh and has one of the country's largest ports and oldest shipyard. The shipbuilding yard situated at Visakhapatnam is the largest in India. The Gangavaram Sea Port is India's deepest sea port.
