Tribal Groups in Andaman Nicobar

In spite of all the modern developments, the tribal communities of Andaman and Nicobar still continue with their age-old traditions and customs. For travelers and holidaymakers arriving in Andaman and Nicobar, tribal culture has proved to be a major attraction. According to surveys, these islands provide shelter to five major tribal communities including the Great Andamanese (Strait Island), the Onges (Little Andaman), the Jarawas (South Andaman and Middle Andaman), the Sentinelese (Sentinel Islands) and the Shompens (Great Nicobar). Among all these tribal groups in Andaman and Nicobar, the one that has the largest population are the Great Andamanese that inhabit the Strait Island.

If we study the numbers of these tribal people over the last few years, we notice that the population has witnessed a downfall. To provide protection to these tribes, the administration department of Andaman and Nicobar has come up and is taking several essential measures. Hunting, fishing, cultivation and poultry farming are some of the major means of earning livelihood for these tribes.
